I don’t like doing political posts. I’m no longer a Strictly Apolitical Creator, but I’d still much rather be writing about TV shows or old electronics. But this election is too important to sit out.
If you’re not Canadian, you can safely ignore this post, or keep reading if you want to hear a voice from on the ground in my country.
I am endorsing Mark Carney and the Liberal Party because I believe they represent the best path forward for Canada through these tumultuous times.
This is not something I do lightly. I have been an NDP voter since I was old enough to vote, and I’ve even had the honour of voting for Jagmeet Singh himself. There are still areas where I feel the NDP has the better policies and positions, at least on paper. However, I don’t feel the party or its leader have what it takes to lead the country through the crises (yes, crises, plural) facing us today. Nor do I think they have what it takes to win the election, and this one is too important for protest votes.
There’s a time to charge forward into the future and a time to hold the line, and this is the time to hold the line. The Trump administration has thrown a pipe wrench into the global economy and is directly threatening Canadian sovereignty, while the far right at home and abroad seeks to throw everyone kicking and screaming backwards into a much darker world.
Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives cannot be trusted and cannot be allowed to form government. I disagree with them on many policy points, but even with that aside, I have no confidence in their ability to lead this country and protect our own interests. Until a few months ago, Poilievre was cozying up to the American right and aping MAGA rhetoric. And he still refuses to get that security clearance. Not only do I not believe Poilievre has what it takes to stand up for Canada, I’m not sure he even intends to try.
There’s only one party with reasonable policies, solid leadership, and the ability to seriously contest the election. I’ll admit that I started looking at the Liberals because the NDP has no hope in my riding. But when I started to learn more and get involved, I liked what I saw. A vote for the Liberals can, is, and will be more than just a vote against the Conservatives.
The Liberal platform is pragmatic and well thought out. They’ve already eliminated the controversial consumer carbon tax, with the intention of using incentives to encourage greener choices instead, and while still holding large industrial emitters to account. They’ve promised action on housing affordability, eliminating the GST for most first-time home buyers and investing in building more homes. They’ve committed to keeping dental and pharmacare. They’re planning to boost funding to the CBC, a critical keystone in Canadian culture and identity. They’re envisioning to strengthen Canada by forging ties with like-minded allies, fixing up our military, and building new infrastructure at home.
No matter what you end up putting into the ballot box, I encourage everyone eligible to go out and vote. If you can, get involved: reach out to your local candidate, knock on some doors, make some calls. This is not an election to sit on the sidelines for. In fact, I believe it may be one of the most important elections of our time.
Let’s put our elbows up, keep Canada strong, and build.
